Stretta SystemA new procedure to treat patients with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is now available at Lane Memorial Hospital. The Stretta System provides physicians with the tools to perform the Stretta Procedure, a minimally invasive outpatient surgery. Approximately 14 million adults in the U.S. suffer from GERD, commonly known as chronic heartburn. Symptoms include significant heartburn, acid regurgitation, difficulty swallowing, cough, sore throat, hoarse voice, chest pain, sleep disturbance, and breathing difficulties. The Stretta Procedure is performed in about one hour. After a brief recovery time, patients are ready to return home and most can resume normal activities the following day. The Stretta Procedure is approximately one-fifth the cost of surgery and a fraction of the cost of long-term medication. Clinical studies show that 70% of all patients who underwent the Stretta Procedure no longer use any heartburn medication. The Stretta System and Procedure was developed by Curon Medical of Sunnyvale, California and cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
